No Tsunami Threat to Hawai‘i After Large Vanuatu Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 6.6 (preliminary magnitude 6.8) earthquake reported at 8:07 a.m. HST off of the Vanuatu islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying that based on all available data, a destructive, Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The USGS reports that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km and was located:

70.9 mi ESE of Sola, Torba, Vanuatu;
150.5 mi SSE of Luganville, Sanma, Vanuatu;
319.1 mi SSE of Port-Vila, Shefa, Vanuatu;
519 mi S of Wé, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia; and
527.8 mi WNW of Honiara, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.
