Maui Police Launch New 9-1-1 Device Location Technology
The Maui Police Department launched new device location data software for 9-1-1 calls on Thursday. The Department is now receiving fast and accurate location data from iPhones with iOS 12 using the RapidSOS NG911 Clearinghouse.
Maui police say the first and most important question in every 9-1-1 call is, “What is the location of your emergency?” This is the first step to dispatching emergency responders as seconds saves lives in an emergency, according to Maui Police.
Through the NG911 Clearinghouse, the Maui Police Department is now able to receive fast and accurate location data during calls placed from an iPhone with iOS 12. Police say this capability is now integrated into the Maui Police Department’s existing 9-1-1 computer-aided-dispatch and mapping software, providing invaluable information seamlessly and immediately to the call-taker.
The Maui Police Department is always seeking to implement new technology that will improve emergency response, department officials said. “With fast and accurate location data, the Maui Police Department is hoping the new software will make a positive impact during emergencies,” according to the announcement.
The Maui Police Department was the first agency in the state to explore the use of RapidSOS NG911 Clearinghouse, who is also working with Uber on implementing this technology to integrate with Maui County’s 9-1-1 system.
Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu said, “The Maui Police Department is proud to be at the forefront of 9-1-1 technology and always strives to provide the best possible service to it’s community.”
