Kamehameha Maui Participates in Active Shooter Training Friday

Kamehameha Mauiʻs elementary, middle, and high school campuses will not have school on Friday, Feb. 15, as faculty and staff will be participating in an active shooter response training throughout the day. The ʻAʻapueo preschool will still be in session that day, but will not participate in the training. Preschool staff, students, and families should not expect a disruption to the normal school schedule.

School administrators say campus services on the day of the training will not be available until after 1:30 p.m.

The Maui Police Department will administer the training, called the Emergency Preparedness Increasing our Communities. The training is an active shooter civilian response training for local schools and businesses.

“While we pray that this type of incident never occurs on our campus, we all have been saddened by school violence across the nation,” Kamehameha Mauiʻs head of school Scott Parker said. “With student and staff safety as our top priority, we want to be prepared to respond effectively and efficiently should we find ourselves in this most unfortunate situation.”

The training will differ from the schoolʻs typical lockdown drills, since it will include a different scenario on each of the three campuses that involve a police response. According to Parker, the training will help prepare both the school and MPD for an active shooter in many ways.

The training aims to provide law enforcement responders the opportunity to become familiar with the schoolʻs buildings and procedures, which could help ensure a timely response. According to Parker, the training will also allow staff and faculty to become familiar with the MPD response process as well as provide valuable information that can help improve the schoolʻs safety plans. Parker also mentioned that the training serves as an opportunity to strengthen the schoolʻs relationship with MPD.

The school is asking for parentsʻ understanding, cooperation, and support of their efforts to provide a safe environment for all their students and staff.
