More Maui Snow! Up to Six Inches in Forecast

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019 for the summit of Haleakalā with additional snow accumulation of up to six inches possible by this evening, according to the National Weather Service. The warning is for the area of the summit above the 8,000 foot elevation.

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park will remain closed – sunrise included – through Friday, park officials said. On Sunday, the winter storm left snow and ice on the Summit District roads, as well as fallen trees and loose rocks.

Park officials say rangers are enforcing the park closure at the Summit District entrance (6500 ft elevation) to protect visitor safety.

The view up toward the summit from Kahului on Thursday morning showed patches of snow, but no significant accumulation overnight.

There’s also a flash flood watch in effect for the entire state through early Friday morning. The National Weather Service says a Kona low will move over the state today “producing slow moving heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms across the island chain.”
