Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by 2 Vehicles
A Motor Vehicle Collision occurred on Maui Veteran’s Highway (311) just south of Kama‘āina Road in Kahului on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at about 6 a.m.
The collision occurred as a female pedestrian was walking within the inner northbound lane of the highway when she was struck by a Toyota truck traveling in the same direction. The Toyota immediately stopped to render aid when a Jeep multipurpose vehicle that was traveling in the same direction also collided with the female in the roadway. The Jeep left the scene without rendering aid.
The operator of the Toyota, a 43-year-old woman from Kīhei, was not injured.
The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not been identified.
The Jeep was later located by police and the operator, a 28-year-old woman from Wailea, was arrested for the offense of Accidents Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury. She was released pending further investigation.
The road was closed for about four hours as police conducted their investigation.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol have yet to be determined as the investigation is on-going.
This is Maui County’s sixth traffic fatality for 2019 as compared to one at this time last year.
