A financial technology company ranks the Waihe‘e-Waiehu area on Maui as the most affordable place to live in Hawai‘i.

The new study from SmartAsset has ranked the most affordable places to live statewide.

The study based the rankings on average closing costs, annual property tax, annual homeowner insurance cost, average annual mortgage payment and median income, culminating in an affordability index figure.

The average real estate closing cost for Waihe‘e-Waiehu is $3,911.

The annual property tax figure is $700 and the annual homeowner’s insurance costs average is $796.

The average annual mortgage payment is $19,056.

The median income in the area is $89,457.

This is SmartAsset’s fifth annual study on the Most Affordable Places in America. These communities are ranked on an Affordability Index weighing property taxes, homeowners’ insurance fees and mortgage payments relative to income.
