Mākena Golf & Beach Club to Host Youth Ocean Stewardship Program

The Mākena Golf & Beach Club will be hosting their Papa Holokai for Keiki ocean stewardship program on Saturday, March 23 at Maluaka Beach Park from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The program offers free ocean safety and stewardship activities for Maui youth ages eight to 18. During the program, crew Members from the Hui o Waʻa Kaulua will be teaching keiki about traditional sailing and navigation practices as well as conservation.   

“Exposing keiki to a traditional practice that continues to stand the test of time is a wonderful way for the next generation to remain rooted in the skills of Hawai‘i’s ancestors while navigating the waters of present time,” Mākena Golf & Beach Clubʻs community engagement director Leahi Hall said.

Depending on water conditions, participants may also be able to go swimming and canoe paddling. The program is limited to 50 participants. All participants must be able to swim well in open water. The program is also a plastic-free event, meaning all participants should bring their own refillable water containers.
