Infrastructure Exploratory Work Begins in Wailuku

Exploratory work has begun by MIRA Image Construction LLC to confirm the location of existing underground utilities in Wailuku town as part of preparation work for infrastructure improvements.

The first phase of the Wailuku Civic Complex project includes the full upgrade of roads and utilities on the block of Church Street between Main and Vineyard streets as well as the two blocks of Vineyard between High and Market streets.

MIRA Image Construction has been hired to rebuild these three blocks of Wailuku’s infrastructure network. Work includes water and sanitary sewer line replacement, the addition of storm drains and lines, installation of underground utilities and construction of curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

The exploratory phase of the work began March 25. It will assist the contractor and the design team by locating previously unmapped sewer laterals and identifying potential conflict points before the road is closed to traffic.

MIRA Chief Executive Officer Mike Gangloff said: “The camera detection system we have gives us a tremendous advantage because we are able to identify issues before they start costing us time and man hours.”

Gangloff is setting up a construction office at 30 N. Church St. It will serve as the base of operations and a place for the community to come in and see the construction plans as well as talk with the construction team.

“We like to have a construction office in the heart of our project area so that we are accessible to the community,” he said. “Projects like this one impact lots of folks in a variety of a ways. We want people to feel they can come to us and let us know how we can make the construction easier on them.”

The exploratory work is expected to extend through the second quarter of the year with physical construction to begin on Church Street during the third quarter.
