Pools of ‘Ohe‘o Closed Due to Stream Safety, System Malfunction
To protect visitor safety, Haleakalā National Park has closed access to the Pools of ʻOheʻo in East Maui.
The pools will reopen as soon as the stream gauge system, which sounds an alarm when flash flooding is imminent, is operational.
All other trails in the Kῑpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park remain open.
The Pools of ʻOheʻo was closed for nearly two years from Jan. 3, 2017 to Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018. The extended closure came following a rockslide that resulted in a minor injury to a park visitor.
Park officials remind the public that water quality varies at the location and violent flash floods or rock falls can occur in the stream at any time. Injuries and even deaths have occurred.
