Maui Visitor Spending and Arrivals Sees Slight Rise

Visitors to the island of Maui spent a total of $413 million this past February, a little more than they did last year, according to statistics from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority. However, the amount of money that visitors spent each day remained the same. Both visitor arrivals and the total number of days visitors spent on Maui throughout the month rose from last year.

More visitors from Japan, US West, and Canada stayed on Maui in February compared to last year, but less visitors from US East came to the island. The average daily census rose 1.3% to 67,078 visitors in February.

Visitors throughout the state spent a total of $1.39 billion this past February, a decrease of 2.7% compared to last year. Visitors from US West spent more compared to last February, while visitors from US East spent less. Visitors from Japan, Canada, and all other international markets spent less than they did last year as well.

On a statewide level, average daily visitor spending saw a slight drop in February year-over-year. Visitors from Japan, US West, and all other international markets spent more per day, while visitors from US East and Canada spent less.

A total of 782,584 visitors came to Hawaiʻi this past February, a slight rise from the same time last year. However, the average daily census of total visitors in the Hawaiian Islands on any given day in February dropped 2% percent compared to last year. Total visitor days declined slightly as well, as most visitors had a shorter stay on average.

Air service arrivals to the state were comparable to last February, while cruise ship arrivals increased. A little over a million air seats serviced the Hawaiian Islands in February, up slightly from a year ago.

Through the first two months of this year, visitor spending declined 2% compared to the same period last year. Visitor arrivals increased 2%, but a shorter length of stay resulted in no growth in visitor days. Average daily spending lowered compared to a year ago.
