Wailuku Bridge Railing Repair, to Begin in July

The state Department of Transportation begins railing repair in July on the Wailuku bridge that passes over Waiale Drive.  The work will result in continuous single lane closures on Kaahumanu Avenue around-the-clock, for several days, while repairs are completed.

Work, initially scheduled for May 28 to June 6, has been rescheduled to begin in July.  Three lanes on Kaahumanu Avenue between the Naniloa Drive/Ting’s Drive Overpass, and Kinipopo Street, will be reduced to two lanes during the repairs.  Two-way traffic will be continuously maintained, but the traffic pattern will be in effect 24-hours per day, seven days per week during the repair work.

During the work day, pedestrians will be escorted around the work area.  After work hours, the existing sidewalk along the south will be open with temporary railings and concrete barriers placed along the face of the sidewalk curb.

The temporary traffic pattern and placement of concrete barriers is needed to keep traffic and workers safe during repairs.

Work includes the repair of railing posts, and the replacement of rusted metal railings.

Equipment will be set up on Waiale Drive beneath the overpass.  During daytime work hours, Sunday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., there will be alternating single lane closures on Waiale in both directions from Nani Street to Oihana Street.  Flagmen will be on site to direct traffic.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time and use caution while driving through the work areas.

Again, the project has been rescheduled to begin in July.
