Search for Missing Hiker Underway at Makawao Forest Reserve

Rescue crews are conducting a ground and air search of the Makawao Forest Reserve following reports of a missing hiker at the location.

Fire officials say the 35-year-old female, identified as Amanda Eller, was last seen at around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Her vehicle was found in the area of the Kahakapao Trail and was confirmed to have been there since around noon on Wednesday.

The search began at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, May 9, 2019) and remained active this afternoon.

The search includes fire units with Rescue 10 out of Kahului, Engine 5 and Air 1. The Maui Police Department is also assisting with officers and K9 units. The search also involves assistance from personnel with the National Parks Service and forestry crews with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
