20th Annual Taiko Festival at the MACC, June 22
Zenshin Daiko’s 20th Annual Taiko Drum Festival will take place at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 7 p.m.
Zenshin Daiko’s 50-member ensemble will perform some of their signature pieces and some new works written by some of its members.
The nonprofit organization is dedicated to teaching taiko to children and has grown from a small, local taiko group to one that has achieved national and international recognition. Zenshin Daiko has performed all over Maui and the neighbor islands, as well as in California, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Nevada, and Japan.
Since forming in 1999, Zenshin Daiko has had over 50 performances a year and had its 1,000th gig this past January.
Zenshin Daiko has also been recognized as a leading builder of taiko drums from used wine barrels, building most of their own drums and helping to repair taiko for other groups.
They will be joined by Roy Hirabayashi, cofounder, and PJ Hirabayashi, artistic director emeritus, of the prestigious San Jose Taiko, along with esteemed musician, educator, and composer, Eien Hunter-Ishikawa of Portland, OR.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
Tickets can be purchased from the MACC box office during operating hours, by calling (808) 242-SHOW, or online.
