Gina Rodriguez will receive the 2019 Maui Film Festival Navigator Award at the 20th annual Maui Film Festival, scheduled to take place from June 12-16, 2019, at the Wailea Resort on Maui.
The Navigator Award honors a film artist for “carving a path of distinction through the turbulent waters of the entertainment industry without sacrificing their fundamental commitment to excellence.”
The Festival has previously presented the Navigator Award to Elizabeth Banks, Connie Britton, Bryan Cranston, Viola Davis, Colin Farrell and Woody Harrelson, among others.
“We are thrilled to honor Gina Rodriguez with the 2019 Maui Film Festival Navigator Award,” said Barry Rivers, founder and director of the Festival. “Gina’s talent, focus, charisma, determination, and commitment to promoting diversity within the industry combine perfectly, allowing her incredible glow to shine on screens both large and small all around the world.”
Golden Globe® winner Gina Rodriguez balances roles in both television and film.
Rodriguez currently stars on the award-winning CW series Jane the Virgin, which concludes its fifth and final season this year. The comedic drama, created by Jennie Snyder Urman, features a young religious Latina virgin who becomes pregnant after accidentally being artificially inseminated.
In addition to Rodriguez winning a Golden Globe for her performance, the series has additionally been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series, received the Peabody Award, and was named Program of the Year by the American Film Institute.
Additionally, on television, Rodriguez produces and lends her voice to the Netflix animated series Carmen Sandiego, playing the title character and reviving the popular character that audiences fell in love with in the 1980s and 90s.
Most recently, Rodriguez starred in and produced the film SOMEONE GREAT, starring opposite Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise. Previously this year, Rodriguez starred as the title character in Sony’s MISS BALA, an action thriller about a woman who gets pulled into the violent world of organized crime in Mexico.
Upcoming, Rodriguez stars in Miranda July’s independent Untitled Heist Thriller, starring opposite Evan Rachel Wood and Richard Jenkins. Other film credits include Paramount’s Annihilation, Deepwater Horizon, Ferdinand and Smallfoot.
In addition to acting, Rodriguez is a leader in supporting inclusion and the empowerment of women. This passion led her to create her production company, I Can and I Will Productions, with a mission to create art that tells stories from the traditionally unseen and unheard. She also established the We Will Foundation with her family, which is designed to focus on arts education and scholarship funding for the less fortunate, with the aim of championing and lifting up young women and men.
