Video: Kahului Man Rescued After Jumping Into Pond at Makamakaʻole, Maui

Two people were airlifted to safety at Makamakaʻole Gulch just before sundown on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

Maui Battalion Chief Kaulana Kino said a 21-year-old Kahului man had attempted to jump into a pond from approximately 60-feet, and suffered injuries to the lower portion of both of his legs. The man was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

He was part of a group that included a total of six people, all local Maui residents. Four were in a safe location during the rescue. The injured man and another individual were airlifted to safety.

The incident was reported at around 6:02 p.m. at Makamaka`ole Gulch, near Mile Marker 8 of the Kahekili Hwy (approximately one mile past the entrance of Camp Maluhia).

Fire officials say the group was jumping and swimming in a pond that was an approximately 15 to 20 minute hike from the roadway.

The department’s incident commander determined that the conditions were unsafe to attempt a rescue on foot. Crews were able to safely complete air operations prior to nightfall and left the scene at around 7:54 p.m.

The Maui Fire Department’s Engine 1 from Wailuku, Rescue 10 from Kahului and Air 1 helicopter responded to the incident along with the Medic 10 ambulance.
