Pilot Project for Pedestrian Safety Launched on Maui
The County of Maui Department of Public Works launches a pilot project this week to increase driver awareness at various crosswalks on Maui.
The project will install “State Law Stop for Pedestrians within Crosswalk” signs at existing crosswalks on Kanaloa Avenue, fronting the War Memorial Complex, and on South Kīhei Road, at the crosswalk north of Uwapo Road, near the Kīhei Canoe Club.
The signs will be installed this week, with additional sign installations at other locations in the upcoming months.
This pilot project is similar to the “gateway in-street treatments” that the state Department of Transportation installed earlier this year at crosswalks on Kaʻahumanu Avenue, Puʻunēnē Avenue, Kula Highway and Piʻilani Highway. However, the County’s installations will not include the white plastic delineators between each travel lane on multi-lane approaches.
State traffic laws require motorists to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
Motorists are encouraged to drive cautiously and obey all traffic laws.
