Hurricane Expert Featured Speaker Tonight
One of Hawaiʻi’s leading experts on hurricanes is the featured speaker at tonight’s monthly meeting of the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council.
Dr. Steven Businger, the Chair of the University of Hawaiʻi’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences, will discuss the evolution of recent hurricanes that have threatened Hawaiʻi. He’ll also address why they form, how their structure affects the hazards they produce and how to forecast their behavior.
The talk will cover the similarities and differences between hurricanes and Kona lows (a winter half-year phenomenon) and Dr. Businger’s thoughts on how climate change is expected to impact hazardous weather in Hawaiʻi.
Hurricane season in Hawaiʻi runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. NOAA is forecasting more storms than normal this year. Are you prepared?
The talk is free but reservations are recommended, as seating is limited.
The talk takes place today (Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at The Sphere at Maui Ocean Center.
