King Kekaulike Teacher Looking to ‘Extend Learning Beyond Instructional Day’

Mr. Fisher has a request: He needs computers for his students at King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani.

“Help me give my students Chromebooks to extend learning beyond the instructional day and replace the aging ones we currently use,” he wrote on his DonorChoose.org fundraising page.

William Fisher is a English Language Arts teacher and chair of the department. He is also a Rotary International Interact Club advisor for his students who are connected with the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui.

Mr. Fisher made his request to the club and asked that members pass his message along to whomever the member thought would be interested in donating.

“I use Donorschoose.org for classroom, club and basically any other supplies that we cannot afford with state funding,” Fisher wrote in an email to the Rotary club. “I currently have a project up for funding to get computers for my classroom.”

As a school teacher, Fisher doesn’t maintain a social media account.

“So, I rely on friends, family and community groups for support,” he said. “Thank you so much for whatever you can do, even if it is just mentioning it to a friend.”

“Chromebooks have revolutionized how I teach my students,” Fisher wrote on his fundraising page. “Whether they are just beginning high school as freshman or seniors ready to take the next step in their journey, these computers allow us to explore beyond the classroom in ways that were impossible just a few short years ago. I’ve been overjoyed at the generosity of the donors on this website. You have been able to give me the tools to give my students opportunities that the school district just does not have the funding to give.”

“These additional computers will give me more flexibility to check-out computers to students for use at home, on the school bus, the practice field between sessions, or anywhere else their lives take them outside of the classroom.”

“While I have enough to support my students’ learning inside the classroom, I cannot yet provide for those students who are unable to attend class regularly because of illness, family situations, or transportation struggles. These additional Chromebooks can give me the flexibility to support those students.”
