Mayor Michael Victorino answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.

Q: Does the police department tag cars that are parked in front “No Parking” signs?

A: Mahalo for your question and for sending a photo to help us provide an answer.

The “No Parking Any Time Tow-Away Zone, County of Maui” sign that people might see on the along the road are enforceable by all law enforcement, regardless of their locations, according to the Maui Police Department. The sign depicted in your photo was specifically erected by the Department of Public Works.

The three cars that can be seen in your photo are definitely in violation, especially the two cars parked on the sidewalk, which is an entirely separate violation. These three cars would be subject to tickets and fines by the police department.

In general, these signs are meant to address safety and accessibility, as well as the free movement of vehicular traffic. I ask all of us to please drive safely and observe all signs on our roadways. Mahalo.
