UPDATE: Maui Flood Advisory Canceled

The following flood advisory for the island of Maui has been canceled.

According to the National Weather Service, weather radar showed that heavy rain has ended. Additional briefly heavy showers could flare through the afternoon.

Update: 2:01 p.m. 8.31.2019

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the island of Maui until 5 p.m. Hawaiʻi Standard Time.

At approximately 1:57 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour from Makawao to Kula.

Additional heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected through the afternoon, leading to ponding on roads and rises in streams downslope.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Hāliʻimaile, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Kēōkea, Mākena, Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Wailea, ʻUlupalakua, Pukalani, and Kīhei.

The agency is urging residents to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility, and poor braking action.

The agency is also advising motorists not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle, or on foot and to “turn around, don’t drown.”

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 5:00 p.m. HST if heavy rain persists.
