UPDATE: Flood Advisory for Upcountry Maui Canceled

The following flood advisory for upcountry Maui has been canceled.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy showers have diminished.

Update: 3:17 p.m. 9.1.2019

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the island of Maui.

According to the agency, radars indicated heavy rain falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour over upcountry Maui.

The advisory includes, but is not limited to, Haliʻimaile, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Makawao, Kēōkea, Mākena, Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Wailea, Huelo, ʻUlupalakua, Kula, and Pukalani.

Additional heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected through the afternoon, leading to ponding roads and rises in streams downslope.

The agency is urging residents to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low lying areas that are prone to flooding. Residents are also being asked not to cross fast flowing or rising water in vehicles, or on foot.

The advisory could be extended beyond 6:15 p.m. Hawaiʻi Standard Time if heavy rain persists.
