Bail Now $250K for Kahului Shooting Suspect

A man charged with second degree attempted murder in connection with a shooting in Kahului on Thursday, is being held on $250,000 bail, according to court records. Bail was reduced from the initial $500,000 bail set last week.

Manuel Nunes Jr., 36, made his initial appearance in Second Circuit Court on Monday before Judge Blaine Kobayashi.

According to Maui police, Nunez allegedly used a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot to shoot Douglas Balinbin in the upper back of his head, following an argument between the two near the old Kahului Safeway store off Hoʻohana Street. Police say the incident stemmed from altercation between two homeless males.

Manuel Nunes was charged with six counts including: second degree attempted murder; two counts of carrying firearm in commission of separate felony; carrying loaded firearm on public highway; second degree assault; and ownership or possession of a prohibited firearm.

Police also arrested Blossom Edayen Nunes for place to keep ammunition, first degree hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence. She also made her initial appearance on Monday. Judge Kirstin Hamman set bail for Edayen Nunes at $16,000.

Both are scheduled to return for preliminary hearings on Wednesday afternoon.
