Festivals of Aloha traveled to Lāna‘i for its annual ho‘olaule‘a at Dole Park from this past Saturday, Sept. 28. The afternoon affair was free to the public and included Lāna‘i eats, Hawaiian cultural exhibits and entertainment by Pā‘ani and Ahumanu.

Attendees were able to learn lau niu (coconut frond) weaving, lauhala weaving, kapala design and stamping, ku‘i ‘ai with Hāloa no Lāna‘i, keiki coloring, as well as making their own kukui nut candle.

“I appreciated the entire line of hands-on exhibitors, the Hawaiian culture is so beautiful, I made a kukui candle holder, carved out of pōhaku (rock), it took a lot of time, but the conversation with Hoaka and Maile Delos Reyes and the end result is priceless,” shared Councilmember Yuki Lei Sugimura, who attends the hoʻolauleʻa every year, a former festival coordinator, it’s one of her favorite events to attend.

Chef Adam Tabura, the first Great American Food Truck Race winner, along with his ʻohana hosted their Beach Bucket Challenge, a live cooking competition where contestants can only cook with what they can fit into a beach bucket. The two rounds ended with Lahaina team made of partners Shaun Saribay and Ikaika Lumlung. Second place went to the brave Lāna‘i high school girls Selina Romero and Marie Claire, third place to mother son duo Trya and Mateo Dubose.

“We come back year after year, gotta come home, home first and then we go to the other islands, Molokaʻi during their Makahiki celebrations, and Maui, said chef Adam Tabura. “I can’t do it without my brother Lanai, Makani and Stevie, with mom Helen at the helm. Lānaʻi will always be our home.”

This year’s 2019 Festival of Aloha has now reached the half way point. Next, the festival heads to Moloka‘i and Hāna in East Maui. The remaining schedule is as follows:

Festivals of Aloha Moloka‘i

Oct. 11 and 12: It’s Molokaʻi’s turn to celebrate aloha. Don’t miss their Poke Contest and Ulu-Uala-Kalo Contest, showing off their ‘ono dishes and Special off-island entertainment. Go early, check out the booths, find your seating spot and enjoy the evening under the stars. Headlining Friday is Paʻa Pono, Moana’s Hula Hālau, Ka Hehena and Kimie Miner.

Oct 12: Parade, 9 a.m., Kaunakakai Town. One of a kind parade featuring pāʻū riders on horseback, country-style floats with exotic flowers. Hoʻolauleʻa to follow the parade at Mitchel Pauʻole Center. Headlining entertainment is Kaʻeo and Anuhea.

Festivals of Aloha Hāna:

Hāna celebrates for a whole week, with 2 to 3 events each day. There’s something for the whole ‘ohana.

Oct. 19 is Hāna’s celebration with parade. Hāna’s Royal Court will open the parade, grand marshall, pāʻū riders, floral floats, vintage cars, custom motorcycles, marching band, the presentation of the coveted 2019 “Tiny Malaikini Public Service Award,” entertainment, Hawaiian crafts and many varieties of local dishes will be featured throughout the event. Hāna Ball Park, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Oct 20: “‘Ohana Beach Day” at Hāna Bay (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.); Fishing Contest (7 a.m. to noon); Play Day (1 to 3 p.m.); Food vendors (all day); Sports Night at Hāna Ball Park (5 to 9 p.m.)

Oct 21: Floral and Lei Contest at Kahanu Garden (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Makahiki (Time of Celebration) at Hāna Ball Park (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Teen Night at Hāna Youth Center (6 to 9 p.m.)

Oct 22: Kupuna Luncheon at Traavasa Hotel (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Makahiki (Time of Celebration) at Hāna Ball Park (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Hāna Tropical Farms (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Alumni Karaoke at Hāna Ball Park ( 6 to 9 p.m.)

Oct 23: “Talent Show” Makahiki (Time of Celebration) at Hāna Ball Park (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) “Talent Show” Hosted by Hāna Arts at Hāna Ball Park (5 to 9 p.m.)

Oct 24: “Movie Night” Hosted by Hāna Youth Center & ‘Ohana Makamae – Preshow: Entertainment (5:30 to 6:30 p.m.); Movie begins at dusk

Oct 25: “Aloha Friday” at Hāna Bay (5 to 9 p.m.) Entertainment; ‘Ulu, Poke and Pohole Contest

Oct 26: “Hāna Rodeo” at Hāna Ranch (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.); “Festivals of Aloha Hāna Hō‘ike” at Hāna Bay (5 to 10 p.m.) A special evening of nahenahe music and taste the island cuisines (Gates open at 4 p.m.) Tickets for the Hō‘ike can be purchased at Hasegawa General Store.
