Honoapi‘ilani Re-Opened After Temporary Closure Between Mile 11 and Ukumehame

The Honoapiʻilani Highway has re-opened to traffic in both directions after a temporary closure that started at around 10:45 a.m. while crews built up a berm to prevent the fire from encroaching onto the highway.

Police are closing down both lanes of Honoapiʻilani Highway from Māʻalaea to the Ukumehame Firing Range.
Police say state crews are working to clear debris from the mauka shoulder of the roadway. According to the County of Maui, the State and Maui Fire Department will also be using heavy equipment on the roadway in the area of the firing range to build a berm to keep the fire from reaching the highway.
The partial closure is expected to last two hours. Police will be alternating traffic during this time. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly.
The partial closure went into effect at around 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019.
