Mauiʻs First Youth Vaping Forum to Feature National Experts

An estimated 26 percent of high schoolers and 16 percent of middle schoolers currently smoke e-cigarettes, according to state data.

To address this rise in youth vaping, over 150 parents, students, educators, governmental officials, and experts will convene for Maui Countyʻs first-ever “Clearing the Cloud” symposium on Friday.

Organizers say the forum will discuss the health risks of youth vaping.

During the event, the Maui Nui Youth Council will recognize young local advocates for their tobacco prevention efforts.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Namahana Dining Hall at the Kamehameha Schools Maui elementary campus.

Here is the symposium schedule:

5:05 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.:Keynote speaker, Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher of Stanford University.

6:40 p.m.: The Maui Nui Youth Council will present its Youth Advocacy Awards.

7 p.m. to 7:25 p.m.: The closing panel and Q&A featuring Dr. Halpern-Felsher, Trish La Chica, Dr. Dean Felsher, Maui Nui Youth Council representative Tyler Fisher, School Resource Officer Brandon Phillips, Akamai Recovery Director Jeffrey H. Chester, and Kalama Intermediate School Principal Timothy Shim.
