Holy Guacamole! Kula Avocado Gets Guinness Record for Heaviest
An avocado grown on Maui has broken the record for the heaviest one grown according to an Officially Amazing certificate issued by Guinness World Records.
Weighing in at 5.6 pounds (5 pounds 9.6 ounces), the Pokini’s avocado is the heaviest on record.
“Our brother in-law Dickie Marciel gave my husband Mark an avocado seed several years ago from his parents tree in Kailua on Oʻahu,” said Juliane Pokini, noting that Marciel’s tree also was known for producing big avocados.
Her husband planted the avocado seed after their son, Lo’ihi was born over 10 years ago. “Lo’ihi pulled the avocado plant out twice while it was still in the pot. We weren’t sure if it would survive but it did. We planted the tree in the ground on our property in Kula and let it grow,” said Juliane.
The Pokini’s say no growing products were used, “We just left it alone except for some trimming every now and then when it got bigger.”
The tree started producing fruit about five years ago and family members say the avocados seem to be getting bigger every year.
The avocado was put to good use, making a whole lot of guacamole.
