First Friday to Include Day of the Dead Festivities

Wailuku’s Market Street will be adorned with vibrant street decorations, a street procession, and participatory art installations on Friday in honor of Dia de los Muertos.

The multi-day Mexican occasion, which translates as “day of the dead,” is intended to bring friends and families together to remember those who have passed.

Friday’s festivities will include free live performances and face painting at Wailuku Coffee Company.

The public is also invited to bring offerings, including photos, food, or flowers, for a communal altar that will be erected at Kīpuka Square.

“Dia de los Muertos transforms something which is otherwise often perceived as fearful or sad, into a celebration of life and remembrance,” Wailuku Coffee Company owner Jackie Goring said in a press release.

“Every culture honors the departed and its ancestors. I hope by bringing this celebration to an event such as Wailuku First Friday, it will create an awareness of the holiday and to this common thread in all cultures.”

Wailuku First Friday’s Día de los Muertos opening procession will gather at 7 p.m. this Friday in Kīpuka Square.

Those interested in joining the procession are being asked to only bring flameless tea lights or
candles, as fire is not permitted.
