Applications Now Open for Duke Kahanamoku Scholarships

Students can now apply for scholarships from the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

As a tribute to Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Duke Kahanamoku, the foundation awards financial aid to graduating high school seniors who competed in “Duke Sports”- surfing, sailing, swimming, diving, canoeing, water polo, kayaking, and volleyball.

Candidates must also demonstrate “aloha for their community” and maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

The Ambassador of Aloha scholarships are open to any Hawaiʻi resident who is enrolled full-time in
undergraduate studies, currently competing in a water sport or volleyball, and is involved in community service. Awards will range from $1,000 and up.

The Duke Award Scholarship is open to graduating Hawaiʻi seniors who plan to enroll full-time in
undergraduate studies and continue to play a “Duke’s Sport” competitively in college.

This $25,000 award is the largest one-time scholarship in the state and will be awarded to one exceptional candidate who embodies the spirit and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku.

Applicants for the Duke Award must be nominated by a school or athletic official. To nominate a student, send your student’s name, email, “Duke’s Sport,” and a brief statement about why they should be nominated to [email protected].

Any student who applies for the Duke Award will automatically be considered for the Ambassador of Aloha Scholarships and do not need to apply twice.

All scholarship winners will be publicly celebrated at Duke’s Night on April 17 at the Diamond Head Theatre.

All proceeds from the event will benefit future scholarships.
