Hawaiian Homestead Associations Head to Speak on Maui

A statewide homelands leader will discuss “Hawaiian Lands in Hawaiian Hands” at a free public presentation next Thursday.

Robin Puanani Danner of Kauaʻi will speak at UHMC Laulima Building, Room 226, starting 5 p.m. Nov. 14. She is the second-term chairwoman of the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations, a 32-year-old coalition of more than 40 organizations.

Danner will explain SCHHA’s “Hawaiian Lands in Hawaiian Hands” proposed legislation that offers amendments to the 1921 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act federal trust.

Organizers say “the recommended measure is particularly relevant during the Ku Kia‘i Mauna movement seeking to block a 30-meter telescope atop Mauna Kea on Hawaiʻi island.”

The event is part of the monthly Maui/Lānaʻi Mokupuni Council meeting of leaders and members of 14 Hawaiian homestead entities. At the event, Danner also will discuss Hawaiian Homes Commission Act entitlements, and a new homestead foreclosure-prevention program.
