A northwest swell spreading down the island chain could generate high surf off Maui and Molokaʻi shores, the county announced today.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for Mauiʻs north shore, as well as the north and west facing shores of Molokaʻi, effective until 6 this evening.

Officials say waves off Maui could reach 12 to 16 feet, with 8 to 12-foot swells expected for Molokaʻi. These forecasted heights are estimates of the “face,” or front of waves, the NWS explained.

Beachgoers are advised to exercise caution and heed all advice from ocean safety officials, as swimming in rough waters can become “difficult and dangerous.”

“Know your limits; when in doubt, don’t go out,” an announcement from the county read.
