Ask the Mayor: Repaving South Kīhei Road
Mayor Michael Victorino answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Q: What is being done about repaving additional sections of South Kīhei Road?
A: Mahalo for your question. I asked my staff to check on this matter and I’m happy to report that the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking public comments on the latest Draft Revision to the Maui 2019-2022 Transportation Improvement Program (“TIP”).
The TIP is the four-year list of highway and transit projects that will be built by the State and County, funded partly with federal money. Data on the County’s pavement condition has been updated since the TIP was approved in 2018, and demonstrates that rehabilitating additional sections of South Kihei Road as well as Makawao Avenue have increased in priority. The specific sections of South Kihei Road are Lipoa Drive to Auhana Road, and Keonekai Road to Kilohana Drive.
For our Upcountry residents, the rehabilitation of Makawao Ave. now includes Pi`iholo Road to Apana Road.
The draft is available for review at https://mauimpo.org/document/2019-2022-maui-tip-revision-6-public-review-draft. Public comments are due by Jan. 15, 2020, and may be submitted by email to lauren@mauimpo.org or via mail to Maui MPO, 200 South High Street, Wailuku, HI 96793.
