The National Weather Service has extended the High Surf Advisory for east facing shores of MolokaŹ»i and Maui in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2020.

Strong to gale force trade winds will produce large surf along exposed east facing shores. Expect surf of 6 to 10 feet today, lowering to 5 to 8 feet tonight.

Forecast surf heights are estimates of the height of the face or front of waves.

The NWS says the public can expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. Surf will be rough due to the strong onshore winds.

The public is advised to seek ocean recreation areas best suited for their abilities. “Always heed lifeguard advice and know your limits. When in doubt, don’t go out,” the NWS advises.
