County Seeks Housing Project Ideas
Maui County has issued a request for proposals for experimental and demonstration housing projects.
The request through the Housing Division of the Department of Housing and Human Concerns would use the Experimental and Demonstration Housing Projects Fund for the provision, protection and expansion of experimental and demonstration housing projects, including the rehabilitation of existing structures, land purchase or other acquisition of land or property entitlements, planning, design and construction.
Proposal applications will be available beginning Jan. 27, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the Housing Division, 2065 Main St., Suite 108, Wailuku 96793.
The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. on Feb. 28.
An application workshop will be held at 9 a.m. on Jan. 29 at the Housing Division office. Parking is off Wells Street. Anyone interested in attending the workshop should RSVP by calling 270-7351. Any special accommodations that might be needed should be mentioned.
Applicants must be a nonprofit organization in compliance with Section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code and should have reasonable experience in housing and/or an understanding of construction principles and standard industry practices.
The county is expecting to evaluate proposals with an emphasis on affordability, safety and environmentally friendly housing projects. Any project that uses money from the Experimental and Demonstration Housing Projects Fund must serve households earning 80 percent or less of the County Area Median Income as established by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, or as adjusted by the department for Hāna, Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi.
