Hazard Mitigation Plan Meetings on Maui This Week

Community meetings continue this week as the Maui Emergency Management Agency attempts to develop and update the County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The public is invited to identify solutions to problems associated with natural hazard threats such as wildfires, significant beach erosion and highway rockslides.

The next meeting takes place from 5 to 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020) at the Kahului Community Center.  Additional meetings will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Pauole Center on Moloka’i and on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 5 to 6 p.m., at Helene Hall in Hāna.

Once approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the plan makes the County eligible for pre- and post-disaster mitigation project grant funding through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance programs and other non-emergency disaster assistance.

The general public is encouraged to participate in the hazard mitigation plan by attending one of the meetings or filling out a Public Preparedness Survey online.

More public meetings will be offered throughout the County in the coming months.
