The Mākena Golf & Beach Club is partnering with non-profit organization Ala Kukui to bring the first Noenoe Nights at Mākena workshop series – Noenoe x Nāulu, in 2020.

Their first workshop will honor Maui’s wāhine (women) nurses and caregivers. Participants will create koko, floral hair accessories traditionally worn by female hula dancers. The workshop will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, 2020, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the club’s Mākena Vista event lawn.

“We are thrilled to recognize those who accompany in times of need – whether the koko framing the beautiful face of the dancer or the soothing words and touch of a nurse or caregiver,” said Leahi Hall, Community Relations Director at the Mākena Golf & Beach Club.

All self-identifying female registered nurses, nurses’ aides, nurse practitioners, and caregivers are invited to attend this event. The event is free, limited to 30 participants, and seats are offered on a first-to-register basis. Light pupu and refreshments will be provided.  Attendees will experience an intimate evening of tasting as they enjoy Hawai’i storytelling and create their own koko (floral hair accessories) to start the new year.

“Koko are a quick way to adorn yourself for your aloha Friday with fresh foliage and flowers that can be gathered in your yard or neighborhood. This floral hair piece or “bun bling” as we like to call it, utilizes traditional lei making techniques as well as some modern tweaks to beautify your do in a flash,” added Kau’i Kanaka’ole, Executive Director of Ala Kukui.

Sponsored by the Mākena Golf & Beach Club, Noenoe Nights at Mākena is a free collaborative workshop series honoring wāhine in the many roles they play in the Maui community and fostering connection through Hawai‘i storytelling and by applying mana‘o Hawai‘i to each shared experience.
