Hale Mahaolu Ewalu
Hale Mahaolu will accept applications for Ewalu II, the second phase of its senior housing complex in Upcountry Maui, from Feb. 24 through 4 p.m. on March 6, 2020.
Hale Mahaolu Ewalu II applicants must meet income criteria and head of household must be 62-years-old or older.
Executive Director Grant Chun said, “This has been a long time coming. The journey to build Ewalu began back in 2012 and Hale Mahaolu never gave up on its vision. This was only made possible by private and public sectors working together. It truly took a village.”
Ewalu Phase I welcomed its initial residents in February 2019 and the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Upcountry Maui Senior Center was completed in September 2019.
“We are thrilled to begin the application process for the second phase of this beautiful senior housing campus,” said Chun, noting the latest phase will bring an additional 22 one bedroom/one bath units to Pukalani, with a targeted move-in date of June 2020.
“We are grateful to the Hawaiʻi Housing and Finance Development Corporation low income housing tax credit program, the County of Maui’s Affordable Housing Program, Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and Bank of Hawaiʻii for providing the funding for Ewalu II. We’d also like to recognize our Board of Directors for their unwavering support, architects Riecke Sunnland Kono Architects LTD for their design and general contractor Arisumi Brothers for bringing the project to life. They have been great partners throughout this project,” said Chun.
Applications are available Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hale Mahaolu Central Office, located at 200 Hina Avenue in Kahului.
Only original completed, returned applications during the specified time period will be numerically ordered using a random lottery system for initial occupancy interviews and waitlist placement. Not all applicants will necessarily qualify. By randomly selecting applications received for placement, the process is equitable. The time and date of receipt of an individual’s application during the allocated time period has no bearing on placement status. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed for waitlist placement in the order they were received.
Ewalu II, the second phase of the Hale Mahaolu Ewalu complex in Pukalani is non-subsidized. Housing Choice Vouchers or other rental assistance may be accepted. Income criteria and rents are as follows:
