Maui has launched a website with information to help Maui County residents file for unemployment insurance or register for job searches from the safety of home in the wake of impacts from the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.

The Maui American Job Center website is at www.mauiamericanjobcenter.com

“This new website is designed as a one-stop shop for people looking for help with job search tools, social service agency information for residents in need and information to help struggling businesses that have been affected by the impacts of the coronavirus,” said Kay Fukumoto, director of the Maui County Office of Economic Development.

“The state Department of Labor’s online claims system for unemployment claims has been crashing because of dramatic coronavirus-related increases in demand,” she said. “But we understand that upgrades are being made to the system to handle the demand.”

The website launch has been coordinated by Maui County Workforce Development Program Partners, State of Hawaii Unemployment Insurance Division and the Maui County American Job Center.

To file for unemployment insurance, go to huiclaims.hawaii.gov/#/. (*Note: When Maui Now attempted to access the site this morning, it was overloaded and could not open). Please keep in mind that due to high website traffic, the public may need to refresh the web page and retry. Online submissions for new claims are taken on this site from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

An instructional video is available to help walk claimants through the process of filing for unemployment insurance. Personal Identifiable Information (PINs) need to remain encrypted and password protected, and emails with sensitive personal information need to be password protected and have encrypted attachments to safeguard privacy.
