CANCELED: Hawaii Tsunami Watch CANCELED After 7+ Kuril Islands Earthquake

The tsunami watch that was in effect for Hawaiʻi has since been canceled.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports that tsunami waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters (0.98 feet) above the tide level for the coasts of Hawaiʻi, Japan, Johnston Atoll, Midway Island, Northern Marianas, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Russia and Wake Island.

Hawaii Under Tsunami Watch After 7+ Kuril Islands Earthquake reported at 4:49 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has ISSUED a TSUNAMI WATCH for the Hawaiian Islands effective an March 24, 2020 at 5:04 PM

EFFECTS: An earthquake occurred at 4:49 PM on March 24, 2020, East of Kuril Islands with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter Scale.

Based on all available data from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter.  An investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

If tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first wave is: 10:42 PM March 24, 2020.
