Council Moves to Expand Landfill, Preserve North Shore Land

Mayor Michael Victorino expressed his appreciation to members of the Maui County Council for final passage of bills to purchase land to expand the Central Maui Landfill and to acquire property to preserve open space on Maui’s north shore.

“The landfill purchase measure provides $1.8 million in bond funds to purchase 63 acres from Alexander & Baldwin to expand and improve operations at the Central Maui Landfill,” Victorino said in a press release.

“The additional space will provide a designated emergency debris site for emergencies such as hurricanes, and it will allow area to expand services to the public, including storage of abandoned vehicles.”

Councilmembers also approved $1.7 million from the County Open Space, Natural Resources, Cultural Resources and Scenic Views Preservation Fund to purchase 48.774 acres in the Haiku Sugar East Subdivision, located at East Kuiaha, Hamakualoa. The property will be preserved in open space.

“These bills are important to the people of Maui County, and I thank council members for taking final action on them,” Victorino added.
