Maui Mayor: Police Will Not Issue Citations for Walking or Running on Maui Beaches

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said he will not be issuing citations for people that run or walk on the beach because there is no clear delineation on what’s a state beach and what’s a county beach.

The information was shared during an afternoon press conference today.

“We are still unclear for the rules for the beaches. My response to everyone to those who have called and those who have asked for clarification–I’m saying as far as I’m concerned, our police department will not issue citations for people who are walking or running on the beaches,” said Mayor Victorino.

“As far as we’ve been told by our corporation counsel and the case law, it is up to the high water debris mark and/or the vegetation, but we all know because of south swells and other different tidal changes, or current changes, that changes from day to day,” said Mayor Victorino.

“So to avoid any more confusion, I’m just saying to our police department, allow them to walk or run on the beach.  I ask everybody to use social distancing.  I ask everyone not to congregate; not to sit, lie or read a book or sunbathe on our beaches.  That is prohibited and you will be cited for that,” said Mayor Victorino.
