20 Emergency Shelters build today at Waiale Park 

An estimated 20 emergency shelters were constructed today at Waiale Park in Wailuku.  The program will help to provide these emergency temporary shelters and services for displaced families and individuals impacted by COVID-19.

400+ Antibody and Diagnotic Tests Conducted at Drive-Through Sites Today and Yesterday

More than 400 antibody blood tests and diagnostic nasal swab tests were conducted today and yesterday at drive-through sites in Central and South Maui.  COVID-19 testing continues to be available by local providers.  Testing is now widely available across Maui County including through the following:

Virtual Memorial Day Services

The County of Maui recognizes Memorial Day on Monday in honor of all military personnel who have died serving our country.  A special virtual service will be aired Monday on Akakū community television Ch. 55 beginning at 7 a.m. and rebroadcast throughout the day during additional times at 11:40 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Mayor Victorino said flags will still be placed on graves, but the traditional live ceremony and flower drop will not happen as many of those who usually attend are senior and elders who are at higher risk of impacts from the ongoing pandemic.

“Today, volunteers put flags on each of the graves of veterans at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery for Memorial Day,” Mayor Victorino said. “I want to thank everyone who stepped up to make this annual honor happen this year.”

The video program will feature Memorial Day remarks by Mayor Victorino. Also, Molokaʻi veteran Bo Mahoe, sergeant of arms and chaplain of the Maui County Veterans Council, will read each of the names of Maui County veterans who died between May 15, 2019, and May 15, 2020. Maui Police Chief Tivoli Faaumu rang a bell after the reading of each name.

The cemetery itself will be open for families to honor their loved ones, but they are reminded of social distancing recommendations.

Future Re-Openings in Maui County

Reopenings continue throughout the county.

• Drive-in religious and non-religious services are now allowed as of today.
• Barbershops, hair and nail salons will be allowed to reopen on Monday, May 25.
• Future re-openings include in-person religious services that are expected to be allowed starting next week Friday, May 29.
• Dine-in table-service at restaurants will be allowed to reopen on June 5.
• Future reopenings such as gyms, estheticians and other personal services continue to be evaluated.

Interisland Travel Discussion

In an Instagram video message posted today, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said to prepare for June 1, 2020.  “What I mean by that is we should be able to do interisland travel.  We’re getting the forms straightened out without quarantines.  So I’m hopeful that that will happen.”

We asked Maui Mayor Michael Victorino today if this is something that he would support and if so, what preparations are being made at Kahului Airport to support the transition.

Mayor Victorino responded saying, “At this time, we’re not ready to comment on that statement. I’ve got to be honest with you, there are more things… and more procedures that have to be in place to make sure that we allow the reopening for interisland travel.  I think June 1st may be stretching it a bit; but we’re looking at June… some time in early June to reopen to local travel–for residents to travel between the islands.  But a number of issues have not been resolved and today’s discussion with the leadership team, which is the Governor and the four Mayors–we brought up a number of questions, and they’re assuring us by next week Wednesday’s meeting (May 27) that hopefully we’ll have answers so that we can start making decisions when and where.”

Yesterday, Governor David Ige said lifting the 14-day quarantine for interisland travel “is top-of-mind,” but he could not pinpoint a target date for making this happen. Instead said he hopes to finalize a plan shortly.

Mayor’s Office Call Center Hours Revised

The Mayor’s Office Call Center hours have been revised.  Modified hours on the Monday holiday are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Daily hours are now 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Weekend hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The phone number is (808) 270-7855.

Phase II of DMV Opening:

County officials say they had more than 2,000 walk-in visits this week from people seeking help during Phase I of reopening DMV services.  Some individuals were turned away because they did not meet the guidance outlined by the limited services provided.

Phase II runs from May 26 to 29.  Services under this newest phase will be limited to the following:

• State ID, Drivers License and Permit renewals–must be expired prior to May 1, 2020.
• Drivers Licenses and Instructional Permits expiring between March 16 and May 31, 2020 are valid for an additional 90 days.
• Credential expires March 16 is now valid until June 14, 2020.
• Credential expires May 1 is now valid until July 30, 2020.
• Credential expires May 31 is now valid until August 29, 2020.

CDL and Commercial Learner’s Permits that expire between March 16 and May 31, 2020 are extended up to 90 days, but no later than June 30, 2020. (Per FMCSA)

• March 16 – extended to June 15, 2020
• March 31 – extended to June 29, 2020
• April 30 – extended to June 30, 2020

• Initial driver licenses, permits & State Identifications
• Disabled Parking Placard – initial issuance & replacement.

ADDING the Real ID “Star” DESIGNATION ON YOUR LICENSE OR IDENTIFICATION

• The Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline to Oct. 1, 2021.
• Hawaiʻi Driver Licenses and State Identifications will continue to be accepted until the deadline date.
• Please refrain from coming in until Jan. 1, 2021.
