Mikiala Maynard, California Water Service Group 2020 Scholar.

Mikiala Maynard of Kahului, Maui was awarded $5,000 from the California Water Service Group to study nursing at the University of Hawaiʻi.

The scholarship is part of $80,000 in college scholarships awarded by California Water Service Group to students living in the utility’s California, Hawaiʻi, New Mexico, and Washington service areas for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The company selected 12 students for the upcoming academic year based on outstanding academic achievement, community service and financial need. Many of the recipients are first-generation college attendees.

Four grand-prize recipients were awarded $10,000 scholarships and eight additional winners received $5,000 each.  Maynard was the only recipient from Hawaiʻi.  The others included nine students from California and one student each from New Mexico and Washington State.

“As our customers continue to be devastated by the pandemic, it may be more challenging than ever before for young people to pursue their dreams of higher education. Revamping and increasing our scholarship program to provide more impactful awards is one way during the current health crisis that we are able to better support our local families,” said Martin A. Kropelnicki, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are impressed by the outstanding work and scholastic ability of these students, look forward to seeing the great things they do for their communities in the future.”

California Water Service Group is the parent company of California Water Service, Washington Water Service, New Mexico Water Service, Hawaiʻi Water Service, CWS Utility Services, and HWS Utility Services.

To date, the company has awarded $440,000 in scholarships to students through the program.  The next scholarship cycle will open in the spring of 2021 for students entering or continuing higher education in the fall of 2021.
