Pukalani Boy and 25 Year Old Man in Kahului Seriously Injured in Fireworks Related Incidents on Maui

Maui fire crews responded to several incidents over the New Year’s holiday including two serious fireworks related injuries.
One involved a 12 year old boy in Pukalani who sustained serious injuries to his hand; and another involved a 25 year old man in Kahului who sustained serious injuries to his groin.
There were also two small brush fires, one in Kula on New Year’s Eve and one in Lahaina early New Year’s Day.
At 6:38 p.m., Engine 13, Engine 5 and Tanker 10 responded to a brush fire at Pulehu Road in Kula with gusty winds of 10 to 15 mph.
The fire quickly was under control by 7:01 p.m. and extinguished by 8:06 p.m. There were no injuries or damage reported. The size of the area burned was not immediately available.
At 12:26 a.m. New Year’s Day, five units and the Battalion Chief responded to a brush fire above the Lahaina Civic Center with gusty winds of 10 to 15 mph.
Crews quickly were able to get the fire under control by 12:48 a.m. and it was extinguished at 2:46 a.m. There were no injuries or damage reported. The size of the area burned was not immediately available.
There was also a house fire in Wailuku that displaced eight people. The cause has not been determined. Details are posted here.
