Tanner Mortenson

Oct. 17, 1988 – Jan. 04, 2021

Tanner Joe Mortenson, 32, of International Falls, MN tragically died Jan. 4, 2021 on Maui due to injuries sustained from a vehicle accident on Ulumalu Road on Dec. 31, 2020.

Tanner was born on Oct. 17, 1988 to David and Sheila (Kleis) Mortenson.
He was born and raised in International Falls and graduated with the class of 2007. He got his start in construction in International Falls, and in 2013 moved to Maui and continued his career in construction. He worked for Ishi Hughes at Timber Maui Construction, operating and doing maintenance of equipment.

Tanner was a true northern Minnesotan man. His roots ran deep and he always felt at home there, but had a very strong connection to life in Maui.

His favorite hobbies in Minnesota were hunting, fishing, snowboarding, ATV riding and all the common northland activities. In Maui, he loved to freedive, spearfish, swim, hunt feral hogs and chainsaw carving, mostly of tikis.

The island is peppered with more than 20 of his carvings, which shows he left his signature mark there. A mark that will outlive us.

His true asset was his ability to connect with people. His humorous character and selfless nature left anyone who knew him no reason not to like him and most to love him. People were his prized possessions with literally thousands and thousands of Snapchat followers to view his comical and downright hilarious antics. Tanner was proof that if you give love, you get loved.

Tanner is survived by one brother, Todd (Bekah Hieb) Mortenson; grandparents, Adolph and Betty Mortenson, and Michael and Diane Kleis; nineteen aunts and uncles; forty-two cousins, and thirty-nine nieces and nephews. A family almost too large to count; all of which he loved so much; family meant a lot to him. He had countless friends and touched lives everywhere he went.

Tanner would not want us to darken our hearts with negativity from events out of our control, but rather remember him for all of the great times that we had or as Tanner would say, “Great Vibes!”

So it will be with family and friends Levi, Emma, Roy and Ishi.

A private memorial service will be held on Jan. 15, 2021 at 3:00 pm at Green-Larsen Mortuary. A livestream of the service will be made available via the Green-Larsen Mortuary Facebook page.

David LaPrade

June 26, 1963 – Jan. 04, 2021

David LaPrade, 57, of Haiku, passed away peacefully at his residence under the care of Islands Hospice. He was born on June 26, 1963 in Virginia.

David is survived by his wife, Sandra Glidewell; sons, Jared Parrish, Jesse Parrish; daughter, Acacia Glidewell; step father, Dan Ferguson; brother, Duane Ferguson; sisters, Becky and Patty; grandchildren Kai and Ryan.

Anthony Joseph Garcia

Aug. 24, 1944 – Dec. 30, 2020

Anthony (Tony) Joseph Garcia, 76, died suddenly after suffering a stroke at his home on Dec. 31. He passed peacefully at Maui Memorial Medical Center in Hawaiʻi, his wife Marie by his side.

Tony was born in Providence, RI and lived on Maui for more than 25 years. He attended Northeastern University in Boston, initially intent on engineering but instead found a passion and knack for finance and business.

After graduation, he joined Wheelabrator-Frye. This led to a long and successful career as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with unique expertise in global tax strategies and leveraged buyouts. Tony served as CFO and in various senior executive roles for the Pullman Company, Wheelabrator-Frye, the Henley Group and TMB Industries.

Over his career he was involved in the financial aspects of restructuring, acquisition, mergers and creation of various international companies such as The Signal Companies, Dayton Superior Corp, Allied-Signal, Waste Management, Fisher Scientific, Peabody Instruments, PTC Aerospace and others.

Notably, TMB Industries eventually purchased the railcar division of Bethlehem Steel and created Johnstown America. Tony retired not long after the company went public in 1994 and moved to Maui shortly after.

He is survived by his brother Joseph, his wife Marie, and his two sons, John and Ben, and their mother Carol. In addition, he leaves behind his grand-daughter Emerson. He is pre-deceased by his wife Isabelle, who passed after a battle with cancer in 2005.

Marie and Tony met at Lahaina Grill and were married for twelve years. They enjoyed traveling the world, fine dining and entertaining. Tony loved Maui and Pineapple Hill; first building a home there in 1998 on Cook Pine Drive and then moving to another home he also had a hand in designing on Summer Road.

He joined the board of the Pineapple Hill HOA in 2008 and served as its president since 2017. Mostly recently, he was happy to play a key role in the “From Our Ohana To Yours” food drive in October that provided an abundance of fresh groceries to 1,000 West Maui residents in need and a significant contribution to the Maui Food Bank.

In his free time, Tony could be found avidly reading non-fiction, debating politics, watching his beloved New England Patriots or catching a heist movie on Netflix. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh.

While Tony took great pride in his successes and his ability to live life on his own terms, those who knew him appreciated his capacity to be thoughtful, generous and kind. He considered himself to be someone who had benefited from his share of good fortune, and he particularly credited the Henry Barnard School, in Providence, RI, as the single most formative experience of his life. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, services were limited to a small private ceremony at sea off the Maui shoreline at sunset on Jan. 9.

Steven L. Kidd

July 24, 1959 – Dec. 27, 2020

Steven L. Kidd, 61, of Kihei, HI passed away at home in the company of his family on Dec. 27, 2020.

Steven was born in Honolulu, moved to Whitman, MA and was a 1978 graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High. He became a carpenter and cabinet maker after graduation.

Steven and his wife moved to Maui in 1991 to work for his father-in-law at Ceramic Tile Plus. Later he became a salesman for Kaman Industrial Tech. Steven was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his daughter.

He is survived by his daughter, Madison Kidd and her partner Avery Clodfelter; former wife, Ellie Doran Kidd; foster father, Robert Derby; siblings, Mitchell and Holly Kidd, Michael and Linda Kidd, Scott and Julie Derby, Rob Derby, Donna Perry and Cindy Kelly; father in law Allen Root, in-laws, James Doran, Georgia Doran, Edward and Kathleen Wyner, Scott and Susan Spence, Erin Tucciarone; nieces and nephews, Jacqueline Kidd, Julian Pierce Kidd, Kilara Quintanal, Mathew Derby, Morgan Derby, Calvin Derby, Jessica Kelly, Renee Kelly, Ryan Kelly, Jennifer Kelly, Jack Doran, Samuel Wyner, Courtney Spence, Sophia Tucciarone and Fiona Tucciarone and his only granddaughter Aria Katherine Clodfelter.

Steven was predeceased by his foster mother Helen Derby; siblings Kevin Kidd, Tina Kidd, biological parents Eugene and Barbara Kidd and mother-in-law Ellen Root.

Family service will be held in Pembroke, MA in spring 2021.

Tom Carl Leuteneker

May 24, 1940 – Dec. 27, 2020

Tom Carl Leuteneker, 80, passed away on Dec. 15, 2020 at his residence in Kula with his loved ones at his side. Tom fought a short, but fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

Tom was a partner at the law firm of Carlsmith Ball serving on the Big Island of Hawai’i and Maui before retiring in 2013. Tom’s idea of relaxation was to be making, fixing or improving things around the house and becoming a gentleman coffee farmer. As he changed from legal mode to coffee farmer he learned how to tend to his trees, harvesting the beans, roasting and packaging his brand of Pueo Coffee Company, much to the delight of family and friends who were happy recipients of his new endeavor.

Tom was a devoted and quiet giver to both his family and his community, not seeking recognition or accolades for the myriad of contributions he made to the community.

The Maui Rotary Club was one way he gave. He helped with many different service projects including: reading at Wailuku Elementary, serving at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Shelter and helping to build the playground at Giggle Hill in Haiku.

In 1989 Tom and his fellow Rotarians from the Wailuku Club saw the urgent need to begin the healing process for the children of abuse and neglect in Maui County. From that vision the nonprofit, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Maui was formed. Tom was the first president of the agency’s Board of Directors and remained dedicated and engaged with the Friends for the next 31 years. He and his wife Anne have enhanced and enriched the lives of thousands of Maui children.

Tom was involved and served on the following boards: Maui Economic Development Board, Aloha House, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center (Charter President), Wailuku Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Malulani Health & Medical Center, Seabury Hall, St. John’s Episcopal Church Elder, Emmanuel Lutheran Church Elder, Charter Member of Hilo Sailing Club.

Tom’s love of family ran deep. He is survived by his beloved wife Anne of 54 years, and two wonderful children, Christopher and Steffani. Christopher of Maui and his wife Winter, and two daughters Kiara and Sevilla. Steffani of Texas, and her son Riley and daughter Malia, and goddaughter, Lisa Silva of Maui whom he held dear.

Tom is also survived by his brother Jon of California and his wife Megan, their children Erik, Heather and Michael, and their six grandchildren.

A private family service was held at St. John’s Church in Keokea where Tom’s remains were laid to rest. A celebration of his life will be held in the future when friends and family can once again gather.

Tom’s family would like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, both near and far, for the outpouring of love and support. Tom will be missed by many.
