A new cold front is expected to bring another chance for snow atop the summits of Maui and Hawaiʻi Island tonight into tomorrow.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the summits of Maui and Hawaiʻi Island until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to the NWS forecast, a fast-moving cold front will bring moisture to the Summits of Haleakalā on Maui, and Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa overnight into Tuesday.
“Meanwhile, a low aloft will drop temperatures to near-freezing over Haleakalā, and well below-freezing over Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa,” according to the NWS advisory.
Freezing rain and snow are expected with snow accumulations up to one inch on Haleakalā, and up to 3 inches on the Big Island Summits. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph are also in the forecast.
“Icy roadways will make for very dangerous driving conditions, potentially leading to the closure of roadways leading to the Summits of Haleakalā and Mauna Kea… Patchy areas of black ice are expected,” the NWS advisory states.
The forecast advises motorists to avoid travel to the summits.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
