Increase in showers for Maui and the Big Island; Maui Flood Advisory until 10 p.m.
Maui Flood Advisory extended to 10 p.m.
The National Weather Service has extended the Maui Flood Advisory until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. At 7:06 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over East Maui, with the heaviest rain falling along the southern slopes of Haleakalā. Rain was falling at a rate of 0.5 to 1 inches per hour.
Some locations that will experience flooding include: Kahului, Kīhei, Kula, Kēōkea, Pukalani, Makawao, Hāliʻimaile, Keʻanae, Huelo, Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Kīpahulu, Kaupō, ʻUlupalakua,
Wailea, Nāhiku, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Mākena, Puʻunēnē and Māʻalaea.
Maui Flood Advisory until 7:15 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory until 7:15 p.m. for the island of Maui. At 4:09 p.m., radar showed heavy rain over eastern and southern portions of Maui, with rain falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. The NWS reports that some locations will experience flooding including: Kahului, Kīhei, Kula, Kēōkea, Pukalani, Makawao, Hāliʻimaile, Keʻanae, Huelo, Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Kīpahulu, Kaupō, ʻUlupalakua, Wailea, Nāhiku, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Mākena, Puʻunēnē and Māʻalaea. As a precaution, the public is asked to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The National Weather Service has extended the Flood Advisory for Maui until 11:30 a.m. At 8:25 a.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain over eastern and southern portions of Maui. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. The NWS reports some locations that will experience flooding include: Kahului, Kīhei, Kula, Kēōkea, Pukalani, Makawao, Hāliʻimaile, Keʻanae, Huelo, Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Kaupō, Kīpahulu, ʻUlupalakua, Wailea, Nāhiku, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Mākena, Puʻunēnē and Māʻalaea.
Flood Advisory for Maui until 8:30 a.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Maui until 8:30 a.m.
At 7:17 a.m., radar indicated heavy rain over southern Maui mainly between ʻUlupalakua and Kaupō. Rain was falling at rates up to 1.5 inches per hour. Meanwhile, heavy rain has diminished over West Maui and the Maui Central Valley.
Some locations that will experience flooding include: Kahului, Kīhei, Lahaina, Māʻalaea, Puʻunēnē, Waikapū, Wailuku, Waiehu, Pukalani, Hāliʻimaile, Pāʻia, Wailea, Waiheʻe, Kēōkea, Kula, Makawao, Olowalu, Paʻuwela, ʻUlupalakua and Haʻikū- Paʻuwela.
As a precaution, the public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
The National Weather Service reports that an approaching front will produce breezy and gusty southwest winds today, along with bringing an increase in showers, especially for Maui County and the Big Island. The front will pass over Kauaʻi tonight and weaken and dissipate near Oʻahu on Wednesday, according to the NWS.
Yet another slowly approaching cold front is expected early next week.
