A tourist spent the night in the Olinda hills before being found by rescue crews on Saturday morning (October 22, 2011).
The 30-year-old woman from Greece had gone hiking on Kahakapao Road on Friday.
Crews from the Fire Department’s Rescue-10 and Engine-5 were dispatched at 6:49 p.m. on Friday to a report of the overdue hiker.
A ground search was initiated based on information provided by the hiker via her personal cell phone, but Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the woman could not provide accurate directions.
The search was suspended at 11:27 p.m. and the woman was instructed to turn off her cell phone and hunker down for the night.
The search resumed at 5:44 a.m., and the woman was located just before 7 a.m.
Medics provided assessment. No injuries were reported.
