Maui police released information this morning on Friday nightʻs road closures and evacuations in Wailuku.

According to police, Wailuku Patrol officers located a stolen vehicle potentially linked to the Pukalani improvised explosive device (IED) incident from the previous night. The incident was reported at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.

As a precautionary measure, nearby residences were evacuated. After a thorough investigation, the vehicle was deemed safe and unrelated to the IED case. At approximately 10:57 p.m., roadways were reopened, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

The investigation remains ongoing.

On Thursday, the FBI and Maui police jointly issued a public safety warning regarding recent reports of IEDs recovered in the Kahului and Pukalani areas. That was followed by a more detailed report involving an incident in Pukalani on Thursday.

The FBI and Maui Police Department continue working jointly on this investigation.
