The University of Hawaii today confirmed the selection of Norm Chow as the new UH Football Head Coach.
The formal announcement will come at a press conference set for 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Chow’s coaching resume spans 39 years, including 27 years at Bringham Young. Other highlights include one year at North Carloina State, four years at USC, three years at UCLA and one year at Utah. He also spent three years as offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
Chow currently serves as the offensive coordinator for the University of Utah. He will carry out his commitment as the Utes play Georgia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl, before taking on the UH post.
Chow, 65, succeeds Greg McMackin as the new UH head coach, after McMackin announced his retirement two weeks ago.
He becomes the 22nd head coach for UH, and the first Asian-American head coach of a major football program, according to a press release issued by UH this afternoon.
“I am extremely honored to receive the privilege of leading the University of Hawai’i football program; it is very humbling,” Chow said in today’s announcement. “This is a program with great history, and I feel excited and energized about creating a program that will make all of the people of Hawai’i feel pride for the university and our state.”
Chow is originally from Palolo Valley and is an alum of Punahou School. He began his coaching career at Waialua High School on the North Shore of O’ahu from 1970-72 before heading to Bringham Young.
“I am looking forward to coming home, to family and friends, and I am going to do my best to contribute to the rich history of Hawai’i and its progress,” said Chow.
UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan said he was happy and proud to welcome Chow to the University. “Obviously Norm is one of the best offensive minds in the country and we are thrilled that he’s able to come home to lead our football program. This is special not only for the university but for him. His wide-open offense and name recognition will only help us in recruiting the top talent to our university and football program,” said Donovan.
