Hawai‘i Police Department is investigating the death of an unidentified man in his 60s, whose body was found in a pasture off Highway 11 near the 63-mile marker in Ka‘ū.

This is the second individual whose death appears to be related to impacts from Hurricane Lala and extreme weather conditions associated with the storm. Earlier this week, police confirmed the death of 93-year-old former Nā‘ālehu schoolteacher May Doi.

Police shortly after 3:30 p.m. Aug. 17 were asked to conduct a welfare check for an individual. Police immediately initiated search efforts; however, authorities were unable to locate him.

The man’s remains were discovered by area residents just before 3 p.m. Aug. 18 in a pasture and reported to police.

Foul play is not suspected at this time. Positive identification of the victim is pending. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation is asked to contact Detective Donovan Kohara with Hawai’i Police Department Area II Criminal Investigation Section at 808-326-4646, extension 3238, or via email at donovan.kohara@hawaiipolice.gov.
